Resident Spotlight: Ray’s Journey to Highland Square

Ray’s life has been one of service, dedication, and connection to his roots. Born of Blackfoot descent and adopted at just 2.5 years old, Ray has always held his native heritage close to his heart. This strong connection to his past has shaped his life in many ways, including his deep sense of responsibility to those around him.

From Military Officer to Community Pillar: Meet Ray

From 1960 to 1974, Ray served as a military officer, followed by a distinguished career as a chief of police. After years of serving his country and community, Ray retired and eventually found his way to Cottonwood, Arizona—a quiet town known as the “Biggest Little Town in Arizona.”

In 2015, Ray became the first person to apply for an apartment at Highland Square and was the fourth person to move in. Highland Square, nestled in the picturesque Verde Valley, offers a peaceful setting for seniors and individuals with disabilities. Ray quickly became an integral part of the community.

Resilience and Community: Ray’s Story at Highland Square

Despite living with COPD stage 4, which leaves him with only 35% lung capacity, Ray remains active and engaged with his neighbors. He uses his scooter to navigate the complex and knows all 60 residents by name. His friendly demeanor and willingness to help others have made him a beloved figure at Highland Square.

During the pandemic, Ray’s caring nature truly stood out. When USPS stopped door-to-door package deliveries, Ray took it upon himself to deliver holiday packages to his neighbors, ensuring everyone felt connected during a time of isolation.

Building Community, One Neighbor at a Time: Ray’s Impact at Highland Square

Ray’s connection to family and heritage is also evident in his daily life. From his apartment, he can see the burial ground of his son and grandson, who passed away from a congenital disease at young ages. This view serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of family, history, and community.

Ray’s journey at Highland Square is a testament to resilience and the power of connection. At 81 years old, Ray continues to inspire those around him, proving that no matter the challenges, there’s always room for kindness and compassion.

“The only way I’m leaving here is feet first.”
